ELGIN — A heartwarming moment unfolded in Elgin this week when 12-year-old cancer survivor Valentina Robles had her greatest wish come true — meeting a unicorn, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Illinois Foundation.
The event, filled with smiles and tears of joy, marked a significant milestone for Valentina and her family, who have endured a difficult medical journey since her diagnosis.
A Dream Realized With Magic And Strength
Valentina, who was diagnosed in 2022 with B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, finally got to live out a fantasy she’s held onto throughout her treatment — encountering a unicorn.
“I’m pretty happy,” she told reporters, as she pet and rode “Gracie,” an 18-year-old pony dressed up as a unicorn for the day.
Gracie, owned by Perfecta Farm, was chosen for her calm demeanor and pure white coat. The farm’s owner, Kim Gardiner, is a cancer survivor herself and has participated in similar Make-A-Wish events.
Months In The Making, Delayed By Health Battles
The celebration had been postponed twice due to Valentina’s health complications, but Friday’s event finally brought everything together.
“It gives them something to look forward to,” said Jessica Miller, a representative from Make-A-Wish Illinois. “It gives them strength, seeing the people around them who want to help them with the future.”
Valentina’s medical team at Lurie Children’s Hospital first connected her with the organization. Since then, her family has seen moments of both hardship and recovery — including the loss of her ability to walk at one point. Now in remission for six months, she has regained mobility and continues to inspire
A Message Of Hope For Other Children
Valentina, who dreams of becoming a veterinarian, offered encouragement to other kids facing health struggles.
“Just keep going forward,” she said with a smile.
Her sister, Margareth Robles, acknowledged the many ups and downs in her sibling’s battle but expressed hope that the worst is behind them. “She lost her walk, but now she’s able to walk again — which is nice. But it’s been hard for all of us,” she said.
A Celebration Of Resilience
The event was more than just a ride on a magical creature — it was a celebration of resilience, recovery, and community. Valentina now joins the Make-A-Wish alumni club, gaining lifelong support as she continues her health journey.
From mystical unicorns to emotional reunions, this Elgin story is a touching reminder of the power of hope and the organizations that bring joy to children during their darkest days.
