13-Year-Old Arrested After Shooting Teen Near Matteson Community Center

MATTESON, Ill. — A shocking incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon when a 13-year-old boy allegedly shot another teen outside the Matteson Community Center, leading to a police pursuit and arrest just hours later.

Altercation Turned Violent Near Local Hub

According to the Matteson Police Department, the shooting occurred around 4:22 p.m. outside the well-frequented community center. Authorities said two male teenagers got into an altercation, during which shots were fired, striking a 15-year-old in the abdomen.

After being hit, the injured teen managed to walk into the center and ask for help. Emergency responders arrived quickly, and he was transported to a nearby hospital. As of Wednesday morning, his condition remains unknown.

Brief Chase Ends in Arrest

The alleged shooter, identified only as a 13-year-old boy, fled the scene. After a brief chase, officers located and arrested him in Richton Park, approximately two hours after the shooting.

Police have not yet confirmed whether the weapon was recovered or if charges have formally been filed. The identity of the victim has also not been released, pending family notification.

Investigation Underway

Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from the community center and speaking to witnesses who were in the area during the incident.

The Matteson Community Center was closed on Tuesday following the shooting but is expected to reopen Wednesday, police confirmed.

This is not the first time violent incidents have occurred near community centers, which are typically regarded as safe spaces for local youth. Local leaders are urging parents and guardians to monitor social interactions and speak with their children about conflict resolution.
