14-Year-Old Among Two Shot in Douglass Park; Both Victims Hospitalized in Serious Condition

CHICAGO — A 14-year-old boy and another male were both shot and critically wounded Thursday evening in Douglass Park, as families and youth football teams gathered nearby in the North Lawndale neighborhood.

According to Chicago police, the shooting occurred just after 7 p.m., when the two victims were approached by a gunman who opened fire — striking both.

First responders rushed both individuals to Stroger Hospital, where they remain in serious condition.

Shooting Unfolded Near Youth Practice

Eyewitnesses told WGN-TV the incident took place while children practiced football nearby, prompting panic among parents and residents.

“There were a lot of children out here. This is where a football team practices,” said Mark Carter, a neighborhood resident who said he knew one of the victims. “There were lots of mothers out here with their children when it happened. I am definitely numb right now.”

Victims Suffer Neck and Back Gunshot Wounds

Police said the 14-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, while the second male — whose age was not disclosed — sustained a gunshot wound to the back.

Both were described as being in serious condition, and authorities maintained a heavy police presence in the area well into the night.

Shooter May Be in Custody, Investigation Ongoing

Sources told WGN-TV that the suspected shooter may already be in police custody, though that detail has not been officially confirmed by CPD.

Officers continue to canvass the area and review surveillance footage to determine the exact sequence of events.
