2 Stabbing Victims Fight Back, Disarm Attacker With His Own Knife In Grant Park, Police Say

CHICAGO — A violent encounter at Grant Park’s skate park ended in dramatic fashion Tuesday evening when two stabbing victims managed to disarm their attacker and fight back with the very weapon used against them, according to police.

The incident unfolded just after 5:15 p.m. near the 1300 block of South Michigan Avenue. Police say a dispute among three men turned physical when one of them pulled a “sharp object” — which officers later identified as a machete — and stabbed two men during the altercation.

One Critically Injured, One Refused Treatment

The first victim, a 38-year-old man, suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest, flank, and buttocks. He was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, authorities said.

The second victim, a 28-year-old man who is turning 29 this week, sustained an arm laceration but refused medical treatment, according to the Chicago Police Department.

Suspect Stabbed With His Own Knife

After the initial attack, the two victims reportedly overpowered the assailant, wrestled away the knife, and stabbed him in return — striking him in the leg, arm, and head.

The attacker, a 30-year-old man with a lengthy arrest history, was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, where he remained under police guard. Charges are reportedly pending, though authorities have not yet publicly identified the suspect.

His prior criminal record includes numerous incidents of retail theft, police said.

Pattern of Violence at the Skate Park

Grant Park’s skate park has seen repeated episodes of serious violence in recent years:

  • In 2024, a man was sentenced to 25 years for murdering a homeless man who was sleeping nearby.

  • In 2023, a man was charged with attempted murder for stabbing a woman at the same location.

  • During the summer of 2022, multiple armed robberies occurred in and around the skate park, some still unsolved.

  • In 2021, a 26-year-old man was shot during an altercation.

  • A 15-year-old boy suffered a graze wound to the head from a bullet in 2020.

Despite its popularity among local skaters, the area has developed a reputation for frequent and unpredictable violence.
