HUMBOLDT PARK — Three men were wounded in a drive-by shooting near the Puerto Rican Festival on Saturday night, the latest in a string of violent incidents connected to the annual celebration in Humboldt Park, according to Chicago police.
The shooting happened around 10 p.m. in the 1100 block of North California Avenue, where a group had gathered near the festival site. A vehicle, described by some witnesses as a blue van, approached the group and an occupant opened fire, striking three individuals.
Victims Injured But in Stable Condition
Police said all three men survived the attack and were transported in fair condition:
-
A 27-year-old man sustained gunshot wounds to both legs
-
A 42-year-old man was shot in the left calf
-
A 45-year-old man was struck in the right leg
No arrests had been reported as of Sunday morning, and police have not released further suspect information.
Annual Event Often Marred by Violence
The Puerto Rican Festival has become a recurring hotspot for violence in recent years. According to police and local reports:
-
In 2024, two suburban men were charged after allegedly firing toward a crowd near the festival — no injuries were reported.
-
In 2021, a man received a 32-year prison sentence after fatally shooting a woman and injuring a tourist during the celebration.
-
Last year, a high-ranking Chicago Police officer was charged with slashing vehicle tires while on duty at the festival.
Residents have expressed growing concern over the festival’s safety, with some calling for increased security and community-led interventions.
CPD Investigating as Community Awaits Updates
