SOUTH LOOP, CHICAGO — A beloved bakery has closed, but four new restaurants — including one from a former Chicago Bear — are bringing new life to the South Loop’s food scene.
The culinary landscape along Michigan Avenue is shifting fast. Here’s what’s closing, what’s coming, and why food lovers in the area have plenty to look forward to this summer.
Teapotbrew Bakery Closes After 7-Year Run
Teapotbrew Bakery, located at 1802 S. Wabash Ave., served its final customers on Sunday, June 1, marking the end of a seven-year journey. The cafe became known for its apple fritter muffins, cozy charm, and close connection with locals.
Owner Veranda Runsewe shared an emotional farewell on Instagram:
“When I opened these doors, I had no idea what would follow — how many of you would become family… how deeply this little corner café would touch my heart. It isn’t goodbye, but see you soon.”
Though the South Loop location has closed, Runsewe’s second outpost at Navy Pier remains open.
Bruleé: A Refined Breakfast Spot Opening in July
Coming to 2036 S. Michigan Ave., Bruleé is the brainchild of chef Emani Nicole Roberts, promising “a refined breakfast experience” with fresh pastries made daily.
The kitchen will be led by chef Kennedy B, best known for their work at Midori Table. Bruleé is currently hiring for front and back of house positions — resumes can be sent to: [email protected].
Adda Indian Cuisine Joins Cloud Kitchen Hub
The popular Near West Side restaurant Adda Indian Cuisine is expanding into the South Loop. It will operate out of the South Loop Food Company, a ghost kitchen located at 2537 S. Wabash Ave. since 2020.
While an exact opening date hasn’t been announced, the expansion brings another spice-forward option to the growing list of Indian eateries in Chicago.
Buttercup Amaro Lounge To Replace 16th Street Bar
The former 16th Street Bar at 75 E. 16th St., once known as Bureau Bar, will soon be transformed into the Buttercup Amaro Lounge.
The new venture comes from former Chicago Bears defensive end Israel Idonije, who’s on a mission to turn the South Loop into a “must-see destination.”
Buttercup Amaro Lounge will offer the feel of a hidden speakeasy paired with rustic Italian flavors, according to concept previews. Idonije’s hospitality portfolio already includes The Staley and Signature, with plans underway for a boutique hotel on Motor Row.
Batter & Berries Now Taking Orders In South Loop
Fan-favorite Batter & Berries is officially accepting carryout orders from its new location inside the Southbridge Apartments at 2318 S. State St. This expansion marks a significant milestone for the brunch powerhouse.
The restaurant’s original location in Lincoln Park gained a cult following for its French toast flights, signature sauces, and local sourcing.
The South Loop is rapidly becoming a hotspot for both casual and upscale dining. From legacy closures like Teapotbrew to exciting new ventures like Bruleé and Buttercup, the neighborhood is seeing a wave of reinvention — driven by local chefs, restaurateurs, and even former NFL stars.
