LLINOIS — Five remarkable students across Illinois are being celebrated for their outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, creativity, and compassion — making them true stars of the Prairie State.
In collaboration with T-Mobile, Patch launched a spotlight series to highlight students making a lasting impact in their schools and communities. Here’s a closer look at the bright young minds being recognized in 2025.
1. Neuqua Valley Filmmakers Win Big At Student Festival
Saavini Bedida, Emma Jenkins, and Jillian Mannisto, students at Neuqua Valley High School, received national recognition after their film “FriendZone” won two major honors: Outstanding Achievement in Cinema and the Audience Choice Award at January’s Student Silent Film Festival.
Their submission stood out among entries from 11 Chicago-area high schools, with all films accompanied by live musical scores — adding a layer of performance artistry to the showcase. Read More
2. Northbrook Native Matches With Residency In Illinois
Aditya Lakkamsani, originally from Northbrook, is on his way to becoming a doctor. Now part of the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine Class of 2025, he recently matched into an Internal Medicine residency at Advocate Health Care-IL in Park Ridge.
Out of 208 students in his program, Aditya’s Illinois placement means he’ll return home to begin serving his local community after graduation this May. Read More
3. 9-Year-Old Entrepreneur Raises Funds With Giant Cookies
Hannah Mroch, just 9 years old, is making a sweet difference in Manhattan, Illinois. She and her mom began selling baked goods at the town’s Youth Entrepreneur Market, but Hannah had something bigger in mind.
Each year, she donates her cookie profits to causes like the American Heart Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, and families in need — a tradition she’s upheld since her first sale. Read More
4. Multi-Sport Athlete, Honor Student, And Community Volunteer
Kevin Bisbee, a senior at Minooka Community High School, is a triple threat — excelling in academics, athletics, and civic engagement. With a 4.13 GPA, Kevin is a National Honor Society student and a standout in football, basketball, and baseball.
Off the field, he gives back as a youth coach and local volunteer, and was recently awarded Rotary Club Student of the Month for March. Kevin plans to study mechanical engineering at Iowa State University. Read More
5. Spelling Bee Champ Heads To Washington D.C.
Alanur Mescioglu, a seventh-grader at Ira Jones Middle School in Plainfield, is headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee after conquering the Will County Regional Spelling Bee.
She outlasted 29 other students during a nine-round showdown held at Lincoln-Way West High School, sealing her victory with the word “polyester.” She’ll represent Will County at the prestigious national bee in Washington, D.C. this May. Read More
