CHICAGO — A Tuesday night family outing turned violent when an 8-year-old girl was shot while sitting in a car on the South Side of Chicago, following an argument with occupants of another vehicle, police said.
The shooting occurred around 9:45 p.m. in the 3000 block of South State Street, when the child and her family were reportedly inside a vehicle that became embroiled in a dispute with people in a white SUV. Authorities say the situation quickly escalated.
Dispute Leads to Gunfire
According to Chicago Police, a man inside the white SUV made threats and then fired two shots at the family’s car. One of the bullets struck the 8-year-old girl in the left thigh.
The shooter fled the scene immediately after opening fire, and no arrests have been made as of Wednesday afternoon.
Child in Fair Condition at Comer Hospital
Emergency responders from the Chicago Fire Department transported the young victim to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was listed in fair condition, police confirmed.
The girl’s name has not been released. Area Three detectives are handling the ongoing investigation.
What Prompted the Confrontation?
Authorities have not publicly disclosed what sparked the verbal dispute between the girl’s family and the SUV occupants. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and police are urging the public to come forward with any information.
“It was not immediately clear what started the argument between the two groups,” police noted in a preliminary statement.
A Pattern of Roadside Violence
This incident is the latest in a series of recent roadside altercations turning violent across Chicago neighborhoods. Community advocates have raised alarms over the growing trend of interpersonal disputes escalating into gun violence — often with children caught in the crossfire.
Community and Police Response
As of Wednesday, local authorities have increased patrols in the area where the shooting occurred. South Side residents are expressing concern over gun violence affecting children, especially during the summer months when more families are out in public spaces late into the evening.
