Armed Robbery Suspect Dies After Hickory Hills Police Shootout

HICKORY HILLS, IL — A man suspected in an armed robbery was pronounced dead after a dramatic shootout with Hickory Hills police officers on Thursday, May 29, 2025. The confrontation occurred near 95th Street and Roberts Road, ending in the alley behind The Pit Rib House.

According to police reports, the suspect opened fire on officers during a foot chase that began after a 911 call reported an armed robbery outside a nearby Jewel-Osco. Officers pursued the man, who matched the suspect’s description, toward the Speedway gas station and into a nearby alley.

Gunfire Erupts, Suspect Found with Fatal Wound

During the chase, the suspect fired multiple rounds at police. Officers returned fire but were unsure at the time whether any of their shots had struck the man.

He was later found behind the restaurant with a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the injury was self-inflicted or the result of police gunfire.

The man was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was later pronounced dead. One officer sustained minor abrasions and was treated at the scene.

Restaurant Lockdown and Public Response

The Pit Rib House went into immediate lockdown as the situation unfolded. Diners inside were instructed to stay away from the back exit.

“The owner told everyone to move their cars. Those parked in the back couldn’t because it was an active crime scene,” said Debbie Chafee, a customer dining at the time.

Footage posted by Arab Chicago captured audio of the gunfire and showed the heavy police presence that followed the shootout.

Investigation Underway by State Officials

The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is now reviewing the incident, including the use of force by Hickory Hills officers.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
