Trump and Xi May Resume Trade Talks Amid Tensions, Hassett Says

Chicago, IL — A new round of U.S.-China trade talks may be on the horizon as White House officials say President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are likely to speak soon—though no official date has been confirmed.

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett stated on ABC News’ This Week that both leaders have “expressed a willingness to talk,” possibly within the week, following weeks of escalating tensions over trade violations.

“President Trump, we expect, is going to have a wonderful conversation about the trade negotiations this week with President Xi,” said Hassett.
“It has been discussed that the two of them will talk about the Geneva agreement.”

However, Hassett clarified that the discussion remains unscheduled for now.

What’s Driving the Renewed Urgency?

Tensions flared last week when Trump accused China of violating a preliminary trade agreement, reached just weeks ago during talks in Switzerland, which included a 90-day tariff freeze.

Trump’s post on Truth Social read:

“So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!”
This came after he accused China of slow-walking its side of the deal.

What Officials Are Saying

Other senior administration figures echoed Hassett’s concern:

  • Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Fox News Sunday that China is “just slow-rolling the deal.”
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called the talks “a bit stalled” but added, “I believe we will be having more talks in the next few weeks.”

Meanwhile, daily communications are ongoing between U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer’s team and Chinese officials.

Context: What’s at Stake?

This latest development comes as the U.S. reinstated several tariffs on Chinese goods, with the EU also threatening countermeasures after Trump doubled steel tariffs to 50%.

A renewed conversation between Trump and Xi could either de-escalate trade tensions or solidify a breakdown in negotiations that may impact global markets and supply chains.
