CHICAGO — A man was fatally shot by Chicago police last month after allegedly attacking an officer with a knife inside an assisted living facility in the South Side’s Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. New bodycam footage and 911 recordings released this week are shedding light on the violent confrontation.
What Happened Inside the Assisted Living Facility
According to the Chicago Police Department and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), the incident occurred just before 3 a.m. on May 5 in the 1400 block of East 75th Street.
Officers responded to reports of a man with a knife inside the facility. After obtaining a key to his locked unit, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation, using verbal commands and deploying tasers. However, the suspect—identified as 47-year-old Alfonzo Wright—reportedly disregarded commands and charged at an officer while swinging a knife.
In response, officers opened fire, striking Wright multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another Victim Found Inside the Apartment
While securing the scene, police also discovered the body of a second man inside the apartment. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as 58-year-old Keith Harding, who had suffered stab wounds to the neck and arm.
Authorities believe Harding was killed by Wright before officers arrived.
Newly Released Video Evidence
On June 5, COPA released several body-worn camera videos and 911 call recordings. The footage shows the tense moments leading up to the shooting and the officers’ efforts to de-escalate.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and no officers were injured during the encounter.
