Tragic Death of Infant in West Side Home
A 25-year-old mother has been charged in connection with the death of her infant son in Chicago’s Near West Side, according to authorities.
Lauryn Shakespeare, 25, is accused of killing her 2-month-old baby, Loyal Rhodes, inside their apartment in the 100 block of North Ashland Avenue on Monday morning. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the child’s death as a homicide due to multiple injuries, categorizing it as a case of child abuse.
Incident Details and Investigation
According to Chicago Police, officers were called to the family’s residence early Monday after reports of a child in distress. The boy was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:14 a.m.
Medical examiners confirmed that Loyal Rhodes suffered multiple traumatic injuries, consistent with sustained abuse. Officials have not disclosed additional details regarding the nature of those injuries, pending a full court hearing.
Shakespeare is expected to appear for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Friday, where more details surrounding the charges are likely to be released.
