CHICAGO — A fatal crash on Chicago’s West Side late Thursday left a 31-year-old man dead and a passenger seriously injured after their car collided with a utility pole in the Austin neighborhood.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. in the 100 block of North Central Avenue.
Driver Veered Into Opposite Lane Before Impact
Police say the white sedan was traveling southbound when it suddenly crossed into the northbound lane, smashed through a fence, and struck a utility pole before coming to a halt. The vehicle sustained heavy damage, and both occupants required immediate medical attention.
Victim Pronounced Dead At Stroger Hospital
The 31-year-old male driver suffered severe injuries and was treated by the Chicago Fire Department at the scene before being rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Passenger Hospitalized In Serious Condition
A 23-year-old male passenger in the car survived the crash but sustained a broken ankle and multiple lacerations. He was transported to West Suburban Medical Center, where he is reported to be in serious condition, according to police.
Ongoing Investigation By Major Accidents Unit
The crash remains under investigation by the CPD’s Major Accidents unit. Authorities have not yet released the identities of either man, and it is unclear whether speed, alcohol, or other factors played a role in the incident.
