Illinois Free Fishing Days Set For June 13–16, Letting Residents Cast Without A License

ILLINOIS — For four days this June, anyone in Illinois can enjoy fishing without needing a license, salmon stamp, or inland trout stamp. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has declared June 13–16 as Free Fishing Days, a statewide effort to encourage people—especially children—to explore fishing as a recreational activity.

The initiative coincides with Father’s Day weekend, providing a timely opportunity for families to enjoy the outdoors together.

Fishing Without A License — Here’s How It Works

During the designated Free Fishing Days, anyone can fish in public waters across Illinois without paying for or carrying:

  • A fishing license

  • A salmon stamp

  • An inland trout stamp

Typically, these permits are required for individuals 16 years and older, except in cases such as active-duty military members and people with disabilities, who are granted exemptions.

Community Events Planned Across Illinois

Various communities are stepping up to mark the occasion with fishing-themed events and activities:

  • The Hidden Lakes Trout Farm at Hidden Oaks Preserve in Will County will offer free fishing pole rentals and supplies from June 13–15.

  • The Wheaton Park District is hosting a “Fish-O-Rama” event on June 14, inviting both children and adults to join in the fun.

These events are aimed at making fishing more accessible, especially for first-time anglers and families with young children.

IDNR Offering Educational Support To Event Hosts

To further promote the initiative, IDNR is supplying a limited quantity of fishing gear and educational materials to groups organizing fishing-related events during the Free Fishing Days.

Interested organizations can apply for supplies through an online form provided by the IDNR. The goal is to increase participation and foster an appreciation for the state’s waterways and wildlife.

“These days are designed to introduce more people—particularly youth—to the joys of fishing,” IDNR officials said in a statement.

Fishing License Fees For The Rest Of The Year

While fishing is free for these four days, regular licensing rules will apply starting June 17. According to IDNR:

  • A standard fishing license costs $15

  • Licenses can be purchased online or at retail vendors statewide

  • Separate stamps are required for trout and salmon fishing

Residents are encouraged to visit the Illinois DNR site for full details on license fees and eligibility.
