Johnsonville Closes Longstanding Momence Plant, Nearly 300 Workers Laid Off

ILLINOIS — In a blow to the local workforce, Johnsonville Foods has shut down its Momence, Illinois manufacturing facility, resulting in the layoff of nearly 300 employees.

The closure marks the end of an era for a site that has operated for over 60 years under the former Momence Packing Company name before becoming a Johnsonville property. For decades, it served as a key employer for Kankakee County residents.

“It’s just very devastating, very heartbroken,” said Lupe Hernandez, a 25-year veteran of the plant. “I’ve done nothing today but sit at home and feel sorry for myself. What can we do?”

Why Johnsonville Closed The Facility

In a public statement, Johnsonville said the closure was part of a strategic plan to optimize its operations network:

“We made the difficult decision after evaluating how best to optimize our operations network to address current and future growth,” the company stated. “This decision was based on optimizing our operations across our other newer facilities.”

The company also confirmed that the building is scheduled for demolition by the end of 2025.

Support For Displaced Workers

Though the news hit hard, Johnsonville has announced a 60-day support package, including pay and benefits for all affected employees during the transition period.

Still, the emotional and economic toll is visible.

For employees who spent decades at the plant, the news has left a gaping hole in their future.

“Many who gave a large portion of their lives to working in the building are not sure where to turn next,” reported WTVO.
