Chicago Outdoors Update: Cottonwood Flurries, Suburban Turkeys, Flathead Catch & Wolf Lake Family Event

CHICAGO — As temperatures climb into the 80s, summer has unmistakably arrived in the Chicago area, and so has a flurry of activity outdoors — both natural and human-made.

Here’s a look at what’s stirring around Chicagoland this week in the wild and outdoors world.

Cottonwood Fluff Floods the City

Cottonwood seeds — the white, fluffy plant debris many mistake for pollen — are now coating sidewalks, yards, and curbs throughout the Chicago area. These airborne fibers from cottonwood trees tend to arrive in late spring and early summer and are especially visible after several calm, sunny days like those seen recently.

While they can seem overwhelming, cottonwood fluff is not a major allergen like pollen or ragweed, though it may still cause mild irritation for some sensitive individuals. The best tip? Don’t run your leaf blower. Wetting it down or raking it up works best.

Suburban Turkey Surprise

In a somewhat unexpected sighting, a wild turkey was spotted in the heart of Oak Lawn, comfortably navigating sidewalks near 95th Street. Although wild turkeys have been making a slow comeback across parts of Illinois, it’s still rare to see one wandering through a suburban neighborhood.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says this sighting is part of a broader trend. Urban and suburban environments — especially those with woodlots or creeks nearby — are becoming increasingly navigable for wildlife.

So, if you spot a turkey trotting past your mailbox? Give it space, enjoy the novelty, and maybe snap a photo.

FOTW: Flathead Catfish Catch

Fisherman of the Week honors go to a lucky angler who hooked a massive flathead catfish while fishing near Joliet. The flathead, likely over 30 pounds, was released after photos were snapped and the size admired.

These bottom-dwelling fish are native to the Mississippi River basin and are often pursued with live bait or cut bait. While not the easiest fish to catch, they’re revered for their size and tenacity.

It’s just one more sign that summer fishing in Illinois is in full swing — and the rivers are teeming.
