CHICAGO — After more than two decades on Chicago’s iconic Magnificent Mile, outdoor retailer Orvis has announced it will permanently close its only city location at 142 E. Ontario St. on July 24.
A sign outside the storefront already advertises a “store closing sale,” signaling the end of a retail era for the Vermont-based brand known for fishing gear, outdoor apparel, home goods, and dog accessories.
Retail Landscape Shift Drives Decision
Orvis confirmed the closure was prompted by broader changes in Chicago’s downtown retail environment:
“Due to the changing retail landscape on the Magnificent Mile, Orvis has made the difficult decision to close our Chicago location,” the company said in a statement. “We are grateful for the support of our associates, customers, and the local community over the years.”
Attempts by NBC Chicago to get further comment were unsuccessful, as emails to Orvis went unanswered or were rejected.
Mag Mile Continues To See Turnover Post-Pandemic
The closure adds to the ongoing retail churn along Michigan Avenue, where multiple major brands have departed since the pandemic. However, new stores continue to emerge — including the Harry Potter Shop, which opened on April 10 and drew opening day crowds.
Despite some activity, retail vacancy on the strip remains a concern for city officials and commercial landlords.
Legacy Location, No Citywide Replacement Planned
According to CoStar Group, Orvis had occupied the Mag Mile space for over 20 years. The property is owned by the American Osteopathic Association.
There are no other Orvis stores within the Chicago city limits, but the company continues to operate a suburban location in Wilmette.
