Strong Storms Followed By Triple-Digit Heat Index Could Grip Chicago This Weekend

CHICAGO — As summer officially begins this Friday, Chicagoans should brace for a one-two weather punch: intense storms, followed by one of the hottest June weekends in nearly four decades, forecasters say.

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms could bring up to 2 inches of rain per hour on Wednesday, with flood watches active across the region until 8 p.m. Lingering storms may persist into early Thursday morning before the city transitions to scorching temperatures.

Heat Wave to Follow Storms

Starting Thursday, temperatures will begin to climb, reaching the upper 80s by Friday. But it’s the weekend forecast that’s raising eyebrows.

From Saturday through Monday, Chicago could experience temperatures exceeding 95°F, with humidity pushing the heat index over 100°F, said WGN meteorologist Bill Snyder. That “real feel” could make it the hottest three-day June stretch since 1988.

“Only five other years since 1871 have seen three consecutive June days at 95 or higher,” Snyder noted. “This is a good old-fashioned summer heat wave on the way.”

Dangerous Conditions Expected

Humidity will keep overnight temperatures elevated, providing little nighttime relief from the heat — a condition that can increase health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.

The summer solstice occurs Friday evening, capping off the longest daylight stretch of the year at 15 hours and nearly 14 minutes.

Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management encourages residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours, hydrate often, and check on elderly neighbors.

Cooling Centers and Public Help

If temperatures trigger an official heat warning, the city will activate its six community service centers, open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in addition to public libraries serving as cooling centers during regular hours.
