CHICAGO — Residents in the Rogers Park neighborhood were left shaken early Saturday morning after a series of violent incidents, including an armed carjacking and two armed robberies, occurred within the span of about an hour.
Carjacker Confronts Driver with Gun on Devon Avenue
The violence began around 3:21 a.m. in the 1300 block of West Devon Avenue, where a 38-year-old man was sitting inside an SUV. A gunman approached him, ordered him out of the vehicle at gunpoint, and took off in the car, according to Chicago police.
Shortly after, officers found the SUV abandoned in the 6500 block of North Lakewood Avenue, where it had crashed into several parked cars. The suspect — described only as a masked male — fled the scene before officers arrived.
Two Additional Armed Robberies in Under an Hour
About an hour later, at 4:25 a.m., two masked men reportedly pulled guns on another person in the 1400 block of West Albion Avenue, robbing them before fleeing west on foot. The suspects were described as Black males, around 18 to 20 years old, slender, and wearing camouflage face masks and black jeans.
Just minutes later, a woman was robbed at gunpoint in the 1200 block of West Pratt Boulevard. The assailant — a Hispanic male in dark clothing and a mask — stole her purse and phone before escaping in a dark SUV driven by an accomplice.
Crime Trends and Police Response
Despite this alarming sequence, robbery incidents in the Rogers Park (24th) District are down 55% this year compared to 2024, and down 41% since 2021. However, other areas — including West Town — have seen a notable uptick in robbery sprees in recent weeks.
As of Sunday, no arrests had been made, and detectives continue to investigate all three incidents.
