Edgewater Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Alley Beating Leaves Victim Critical

CHICAGO — A 49-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a violent alley attack in the Edgewater neighborhood that left a 36-year-old man hospitalized in critical condition, according to Chicago police.

Roosevelt McCree, a resident of the 600 block of West Elm Street, was arrested on Saturday evening following a days-long investigation into the brutal incident. Authorities allege McCree attacked the victim in a rear alley on the city’s Far North Side, striking him in the head with a blunt object.

Screams Heard Moments Before the Assault

The assault occurred around 10 p.m. Thursday, June 19, in the 5800 block of North Kenmore Avenue. A nearby 911 caller reported hearing loud screams and a voice shouting, “I’m going to kill you,” followed by the sound of a motorcycle quickly leaving the scene.

A passerby discovered the injured man moments later, lying in the alley and initially believed he had been shot. Emergency responders rushed him to St. Francis Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police Say Victim Was Beaten, Not Shot

Upon examination, medical personnel confirmed that the victim had not been shot but had instead sustained significant head trauma from being struck with a blunt object.

He remained unidentified for hours after the attack, and police launched an investigation that eventually led them to McCree.

Suspect Faces Serious Felony Charges

McCree was taken into custody Saturday in Edgewater and now faces multiple felony counts, including:

  • Attempted first-degree murder

  • Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon

He is scheduled for a detention hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on Tuesday, where additional details are expected to emerge.

As of Monday, no known motive has been publicly shared by investigators.

Incident Adds to Ongoing Safety Concerns

The alley where the attack took place is just blocks from busy Broadway Avenue and residential buildings. Neighbors say the incident adds to ongoing concerns about public safety in Edgewater, especially during late hours when foot traffic is low.

Authorities have not yet stated whether the suspect and victim knew each other prior to the assault.
