CHICAGO — Birrieria Zaragoza, a cherished staple of Chicago’s Mexican culinary scene, has temporarily closed after a stove fire caused damage to its Archer Heights building Monday afternoon. The fire erupted at the restaurant’s longtime location at 4852 S. Pulaski Rd., prompting a swift response from the Chicago Fire Department.
The fire, which began around 2:45 p.m. and was extinguished by 3 p.m., originated in the stove area on the building’s second floor, according to fire department spokesperson Larry Langford. The structure — a one-and-a-half-story, mixed-use property at Pulaski and 49th Street — sustained damage to its north side siding and window glass.
“It was a pretty good fire,” said neighbor Sandy Storino. “Flames were coming out the side of the building.”
Damage Significant But Not Catastrophic
Langford clarified that although the fire left visible damage, it did not render the building structurally unsound.
“Not real bad. Enough to cause fire damage, but not enough to cause a whole lot of mess up,” Langford stated.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported and there was no ambulance response. Given the fire’s origin on a stove, officials do not anticipate a further investigation.
Restaurant Thanks Supporters and First Responders
Birrieria Zaragoza shared an emotional message on Instagram following the incident, expressing gratitude for the community’s support and the firefighters’ efforts.
“Our family has poured our hearts into this place for years, and while this is a difficult moment, we are committed to rebuilding and coming back stronger,” the post read. “Thank you to everyone who has reached out — we feel your love and support.”
As of Tuesday, a “closed temporarily” sign hung on the restaurant’s front door. Owner John Zaragoza confirmed by phone that the family was still assessing the extent of the damage, though other family members declined to comment and requested privacy during this time.
