Peoria Kroger Closure Sparks Concern and Hope for Food Desert Solutions

ILLINOIS — A prominent Kroger grocery store in Peoria has shut its doors, sparking both alarm and renewed calls for long-term food access solutions among local leaders. The store, located on Sterling Avenue, was one of 60 Kroger locations closed nationwide this week.

Peoria 1st District Councilperson Denise Jackson expressed deep concern about the loss of access to affordable, healthy food for residents in several neighborhoods near the now-shuttered location.

“Any time a grocery store closes, it’s almost akin to a school closing,” Jackson said. “Grocery stores are staples in our community.”

Neighborhoods Left in the Lurch

The Sterling Oaks, Ward Cliff, Forest Hill Avenue, and Gale Avenue communities have long relied on the Sterling Avenue Kroger. The closure could create a food access crisis for seniors and families without reliable transportation.

Jackson noted that the store was surrounded by other businesses and served a high-traffic area, making its absence especially impactful.

As reported by CIProud, residents now face longer travel times or reduced access to basic groceries unless alternative options are strengthened quickly.

Market 309 and CJ Harvest Step In

To fill the growing void, local food initiatives like Market 309 have gained new momentum. Jackson has long championed Market 309 and helped secure funding through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) surplus for the program.

Market 309, in partnership with Hy-Vee, provides:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables

  • Non-perishable items

  • Eggs and dairy (occasionally)

  • Community-focused service for underserved areas

“They’ve spent years talking to residents, providing healthy alternatives, and seeing positive outcomes,” Jackson said.

Meanwhile, CJ Harvest Supermarket, led by Rev. Chuck Brown, is another promising development for West Peoria. Located on South Western Avenue, the store received a $1.5 million grant from Governor JB Pritzker in 2024.

A New Supermarket to Open This Fall

CJ Harvest aims to open by September, with construction starting in July. It is designed to serve one of Peoria’s largest food desert zones, with a strong focus on affordable fresh produce and meats.

“We are putting a lot of emphasis on our produce as well as our meat department,” said Rev. Brown, who confirmed that building permits and final planning are already underway.

The store is expected to provide a local alternative to families now affected by the Kroger shutdown, while also creating local jobs.
