CHICAGO — A burst of early-morning gunfire damaged a hotel and nearby restaurant in the heart of the Loop on Sunday, sparking renewed concerns over downtown safety and surveillance gaps in the area.
Chicago police responded to reports of shots fired around 3:57 a.m. in the 500 block of South Wabash Avenue, just steps from major public transit and hotels frequented by tourists. While no injuries were reported, officers confirmed that two businesses and a vehicle were struck by gunfire.
Travelodge and Thai Restaurant Targeted
ABC7 cameras captured broken windows and visible bullet holes at the Travelodge hotel and neighboring Thai Spoon and Sushi restaurant. Authorities have not confirmed whether either business was open at the time of the shooting, but no staff or guests were reported injured.
The Travelodge, a budget hotel popular among tourists and students, sits at a busy intersection of the South Loop. The shooting raises renewed questions about safety measures in one of Chicago’s most trafficked neighborhoods.
No Arrests or Motive Released
As of Sunday evening, no suspects were in custody, and the motive behind the gunfire remains unclear, according to police. Surveillance footage is expected to play a key role in the investigation.
The CPD is reviewing area cameras and asking for the public’s help. The shooting occurred near multiple hotels and restaurants—locations usually patrolled heavily during weekends.
Downtown Violence Prompts Safety Concerns
While violent crime in downtown Chicago remains lower than in some other neighborhoods, incidents near hotels and major intersections have raised alarm, especially among tourists and local business owners.
“This is the kind of thing that scares off customers and visitors,” one Loop business owner told ChicagoSuburbanFamily.com. “Even if no one gets hurt, it leaves a lasting impression.”
