CHICAGO — A Fourth of July celebration in Buena Park turned tragic when an 8-year-old girl was killed in a fireworks explosion authorities say involved illegal pyrotechnics.
The incident happened around 9:45 p.m. on Cornflower Circle, where officers found the child being carried into a home by frantic family members. She was rushed to UC Irvine Medical Center but could not be saved.
Illegal Fireworks Led to Catastrophic Blast
The fatal explosion occurred after a firework misfired and ignited other nearby explosives, triggering a violent chain reaction, according to FOX LA.
Police say the homeowner had been setting off illegal fireworks in the front yard when the blast occurred. The child sustained devastating injuries consistent with a fireworks explosion, as confirmed by CBS News Los Angeles.
Homeowner Arrested After Child’s Death
The homeowner was taken into custody at the scene. The case is now under review by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, and charges are expected. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released, nor has the name of the 8-year-old girl.
Police are working alongside the Orange County Fire Authority and the Sheriff’s Bomb Squad to investigate the explosion, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Second Fatal Fireworks Incident in Southern California
This marks the second fireworks-related death in Southern California over the holiday weekend, as reported by KTLA. Law enforcement agencies are renewing calls for public awareness and compliance with fireworks laws.
Witnesses Urged to Come Forward
Police are requesting that residents who witnessed the incident or have relevant footage contact the Buena Park Police Department. Investigators hope community cooperation will help clarify the sequence of events.
