Northeast Ohio Alert: Weekend Rain, Lightning and Swim Advisories Until Saturday Night

CLEVELAND — Residents across Northeast Ohio should brace for thunderstorms, lightning, and dangerous swimming conditions through Saturday night as storms push into the region by mid-afternoon.

Scattered Storms Expected Saturday Afternoon

The National Weather Service in Cleveland forecasts a 60% chance of rain Saturday, especially after 3 p.m., with thunderstorms likely to develop across the area. While rainfall totals are expected to stay under a tenth of an inch, stronger storm cells may bring localized flooding, particularly in low-lying or urban areas such as downtown Cleveland and Lakewood.

Some storms may also produce gusty winds, creating additional risks for outdoor activities during the weekend.

Lake Erie Beach Hazards in Effect

In addition to the rain threat, the National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Lake Erie, in effect through 8 p.m. Saturday. The alert warns of strong currents and wave activity along breakwalls and piers, putting swimmers and boaters at risk.

High-risk areas include Edgewater Park and Mentor Headlands, where residents are urged to use extreme caution or avoid entering the water altogether.

Five-Day Forecast Brings Brief Relief

Weather will briefly improve on Sunday, with mostly sunny skies and highs around 78°F. However, the break is short-lived, as storm chances return Tuesday night into Wednesday, potentially bringing more lightning and downpours to Northeast Ohio.

Cleveland Five-Day Forecast:

  • Sunday: Mostly sunny, high 78°F
  • Monday: Mostly sunny, high 84°F
  • Tuesday: Chance of evening storms, high 84°F
  • Wednesday: Showers and storms likely, high 81°F
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, high 79°F
