Virginia Weather Alert: Dense Fog Slows Travel Near Rivers Until 9 a.m. Sunday
VIRGINIA — A dense fog advisory is in effect for parts of southwest Virginia through 9 a.m. Sunday, significantly reducing visibility near rivers, valleys, and other low-lying areas.
Motorists traveling early Sunday are being warned to use extreme caution, particularly along Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 460, where visibility could drop to near zero at times due to the thick fog.
Montgomery, Pulaski, Giles Counties Most Affected
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg reports that the fog is most persistent in Montgomery, Pulaski, and Giles counties, where humid air and calm overnight winds allowed the fog to thicken rapidly.
Travelers are advised to:
- Keep headlights on low beam
- Drive at reduced speeds
- Leave extra space between vehicles
- Delay early morning travel if possible
Weather to Clear Later Today, But More Storms Coming
Once the fog lifts, mostly sunny skies are expected with highs near 88°F by afternoon. However, storm chances return late Sunday night, especially after 2 p.m. Monday. Daily afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout the week.
The five-day forecast for Blacksburg, VA, includes:
- Sunday: Dense fog until 9 a.m., then sunny, high near 88°F
- Monday: Mostly sunny, high 85°F; thunderstorms possible in the afternoon
- Tuesday: Mostly cloudy, high 80°F; chance of storms
- Wednesday: Partly sunny, high 82°F; scattered storms
- Thursday: Mostly cloudy, high 80°F; storms likely
Officials Urge Caution Until Fog Lifts
Authorities are asking drivers to check road conditions before traveling Sunday morning. If possible, delay nonessential travel until visibility improves.
“Even familiar roads can become dangerous during fog conditions,” forecasters noted. “Plan ahead, leave early, and stay alert.”
