Oklahoma City Weather Alert: Heat Index Near 103 Through Sunday Night Before Storm Chances Tuesday
OKLAHOMA CITY – A dangerous summer heat wave continues to bake central Oklahoma, with heat index values nearing 103°F and air temperatures peaking in the mid to upper 90s through Sunday night.
The National Weather Service in Norman has issued a heat advisory for Oklahoma County and surrounding areas as the region endures one of the hottest stretches of the season. Forecast models suggest temperatures will climb to 96°F on Saturday, and up to 97°F again by Monday, all under mostly sunny skies with little relief from winds.
Residents Urged to Stay Indoors and Hydrated
Residents in Oklahoma City, Edmond, and Moore are advised to limit outdoor activities, especially during the peak afternoon hours. With high humidity amplifying the heat, health officials warn that heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heatstroke are more likely with prolonged exposure. Cooling centers remain open across the metro area to offer relief.
Drivers are also reminded not to leave pets or children in vehicles, even briefly, as interior car temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
Storm Relief Possible Tuesday Afternoon
While Saturday through Monday will bring intense sun and little moisture, a slight break may arrive Tuesday, as scattered thunderstorms are forecast to develop in the afternoon. These storms could bring cooler temperatures, but also gusty winds and lightning that pose additional hazards.
Warnings and advisories will remain in place through Monday night, with the potential for extended alerts if heat continues into midweek.
