Auburn Gresham Shooting Turns Into 7-Hour SWAT Standoff — But Suspect Escapes

CHICAGO — An attempted car sale on Chicago’s South Side took a deadly turn early Wednesday, leading to a seven-hour SWAT standoff in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood — but no arrest was made.

According to CBS Chicago, the incident began just after midnight, when a 26-year-old man was shot in the head during a planned car sale. The shooting occurred near the 7800 block of South Paulina Street, police said.

The victim was rushed to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses Point Police to Nearby Building

A witness told officers that the shooter was seen running into a nearby building, prompting a full-scale SWAT response. The team secured the area and began operations to locate the suspect inside.

Despite more than seven hours on the scene, police were unable to apprehend the gunman. A law enforcement source informed CBS that the suspect may have slipped out of the building as SWAT was organizing reinforcements.

Community on Edge as Gunman Remains at Large

The incident has left residents in Auburn Gresham on edge, as the suspected shooter remains at large with no arrests made. As of Wednesday afternoon, Chicago Police said the investigation remains active, and no further information about the suspect’s identity had been released.

The shooting adds to ongoing concerns about violent crimes linked to private sales and meetup transactions in urban neighborhoods.
