Baltimore-Washington Weather: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Sweep Through the Region

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Thunderstorms and heavy rain are sweeping across the Baltimore–Washington metro area this morning, prompting alerts for localized flooding and gusty winds as October draws to a close. The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington reports that showers and embedded storms are producing downpours capable of flooding low-lying or urban areas during the morning commute.

Storms Bring Downpours and Strong Gusts

Radar imagery early Thursday showed widespread thunderstorms stretching from Winchester and Hagerstown through Baltimore and into the D.C. region. Some of these storms are producing brief heavy rainfall, causing poor drainage flooding along major routes and intersections. A few isolated storms may also produce damaging wind gusts or a brief tornado, particularly west of the I-95 corridor, where instability is slightly higher.

Conditions Improve by Midday

Forecasters say rain will gradually taper off by midday, with clearing skies possible by late afternoon. Temperatures will stay mild, reaching the upper 60s, but cooler air will follow the departing system by Friday morning. The remainder of the week looks much calmer, offering drier and more comfortable conditions for weekend plans.

Safety Reminders for Morning Commuters

Drivers are urged to slow down on wet roads, use headlights, and avoid flooded intersections. Even shallow water can cause vehicles to hydroplane or stall. Commuters should plan extra travel time during the early hours before conditions improve later in the day.

Weekend Outlook

The region will see a pleasant rebound Friday and Saturday, with partly sunny skies and highs near 65°F. Light winds and drier air will settle in, bringing an early taste of November’s cooler but calmer pattern.

The early-morning storms may be short-lived, but they’re a reminder that fall’s weather mood swings are in full effect across the Mid-Atlantic — from humid mornings to crisp, breezy weekends.
