WASHINGTON PARK, CHICAGO — South Side job seekers interested in public safety careers will have a unique opportunity this Friday as the Black Fire Brigade hosts its latest hiring fair, offering direct access to recruiters from over a dozen companies.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Black Fire Brigade Training Center, located at 5349 S. Wabash Ave. Sponsored by Boeing, the job fair will feature employers offering roles in emergency medical services, fire safety, law enforcement, and broader public safety sectors.
Lt. Quention Curtis, founder of the Black Fire Brigade, emphasized the importance of getting Black youth into public safety positions — not only for individual career growth, but for the long-term health of their communities.
“It’s a great way to connect the youth because now they’re in the room with the decision makers,” Curtis said. “They’re getting a better understanding of all the different jobs and components that are involved.”
Resumes and certifications encouraged
Attendees are encouraged to bring updated résumés and any relevant certifications, as some employers are expected to hire on the spot.
Curtis said the job fair is more than just a networking opportunity — it’s a deliberate intervention aimed at empowering underrepresented communities.
“As people get pushed out of jobs, we have to remember public safety is a constant,” he said. “It’s a constant job. It’s a constant movement. And we have to get back to putting more Black people in their community. It gives them an opportunity to work and gain experience in the field.”
Brigade’s growing legacy
The Black Fire Brigade has already trained hundreds of Black and Brown Chicagoans for careers as firefighters, EMTs, and other first responders. Many alumni have returned to the program to serve as instructors and mentors, paying it forward to the next generation.
In addition to Friday’s job fair, the organization is also preparing to celebrate a milestone — its 7th anniversary on June 14, with a community gathering planned at the same Washington Park training center from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
