CHICAGO — During a heartfelt speech at a prominent LGBTQ luncheon in downtown Chicago, Caitlyn Jenner opened up about her life before coming out, sharing a humorous and deeply personal memory of being caught trying on one of her daughter’s outfits — unknowingly recorded by a hidden camera.
The story was part of Jenner’s keynote address at the Chicago House Speaker Series luncheon, hosted at the Hilton Chicago’s Grand Ballroom. The annual event supports housing and resources for LGBTQ individuals and those impacted by HIV/AIDS.
Jenner Describes ‘Technology Got Me’ Moment
Jenner, a former Olympian and star of E!’s I Am Cait, recalled a time when her daughters were arguing over missing clothes. One of them set up a camera to catch the culprit — unaware that it would capture Jenner herself.
“I thought I was so clever, so cute — and technology got me one time,” Jenner joked, to laughter from the crowd, as quoted by NBC Chicago.
She said she believed the house was empty and took a quiet moment to try on a few things. “I’ve got like three or four hours, let’s try on a few things,” she said. But the plan backfired when her daughters unexpectedly returned home, discovering the footage — and the truth.
Another Close Call with the Paparazzi
In another anecdote, Jenner shared how she once had her nails polished while living in Malibu, attempting to keep a low profile. To avoid being photographed by paparazzi, she said she even went as far as using only her pinkie finger to open a car door.
Despite her effort, “Next day, Daily Mail — there’s that pinkie,” she said, smiling. “They got it.”
A Long Line of Distinguished Speakers
Jenner joins a list of past Chicago House speakers that includes President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Whoopi Goldberg, and Hillary Clinton. Her presence and vulnerability at the event served to highlight the organization’s mission: affirming dignity, inclusion, and community for those often marginalized.
