MISSISSIPPI — A Heat Advisory remains in effect across central, north, and west Mississippi, with “feels-like” temperatures expected to reach up to 110°F in several areas including Jackson, Greenville, and Yazoo City through 7 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
The advisory spans across a broad region, also covering parts of southeast Arkansas and northeast Louisiana, with cities like Vicksburg, Greenwood, Natchez, and Starkville all bracing for dangerous heat levels.
Communities Urged to Take Precautions
Residents in counties stretching from Columbus to Cleveland, and as far south as Adams and Jefferson counties, are urged to limit outdoor exposure — especially during peak afternoon hours between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Health officials have issued the following safety guidance:
- Stay hydrated
- Wear loose, light-colored clothing
- Use air-conditioned environments
- Avoid strenuous activities outdoors
- Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles
For outdoor workers in areas like Port Gibson, Bastrop, and Chicot County, experts recommend taking frequent shaded breaks and watching closely for signs of heat-related illness such as:
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Headache
- Confusion or weakness
Power Grid and Community Impact
With temperatures this extreme, power grids may experience strain from increased air conditioning use. Emergency services warn that heat-related medical calls could rise, particularly among vulnerable populations like seniors and outdoor workers.
Residents are reminded to:
- Check on elderly family members and neighbors
- Make sure pets have access to shade and water
- Postpone high-intensity work or exercise until cooler times of the day
More Heat Alerts Could Follow
While this advisory is currently set to expire at 7 p.m. Thursday, forecasters caution that similar alerts may return later this week as high-pressure systems continue to dominate the region.
