CHICAGO — Chicago has officially earned a new culinary title: the most vegan-friendly city in the U.S., according to a recent announcement from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

The recognition is a notable turnaround for a city once dubbed “The Hog Butcher of the World,” now celebrated for its growing plant-based dining culture.

Vegan Options Thriving Across the City

From plant-based deep-dish pizza to vegan Italian beef, Chicago’s chefs and entrepreneurs have made it easier than ever to enjoy classic Windy City fare without animal products. PETA praised the city’s diverse and innovative vegan options, including those found at Runaway Cow, a soft-serve ice cream shop in Bridgeport.

Co-owner Alison Eichhorn, once a Dairy Queen employee, opened the shop in 2024 to recreate nostalgic frozen treats with a vegan twist. “Many of our customers don’t even realize it’s oat milk until I tell them,” Eichhorn said.

Iconic Vegan Restaurants Contribute to Recognition

PETA’s decision to award Chicago this title also comes in part due to local staples like Majani, a South Shore vegan restaurant specializing in Southern cuisine. Its founder, Tsadakeeyah Emmanuel, opened the spot in 2017 and dreams of one day launching a “vegan village” filled with all-vegan businesses. He notes that a large portion of his customers aren’t vegan — proof that great flavor has wide appeal.

Another popular destination is Native Foods in the Loop, where manager Dame Dia emphasizes health-conscious eating. The restaurant features Senegalese dishes and vegan takes on classic American favorites.

More Than Just a Trend

While the vegan scene in Chicago is growing, some owners like Eichhorn still worry about public perception. “We’re still seeing people afraid of the word ‘vegan,’” she said, noting that some restaurants have struggled to stay open. However, she and others remain optimistic as more residents prioritize health, ethics, and sustainability in their food choices.

PETA’s Amanda Brody applauded the city’s transformation, stating that Chicago’s accessibility to plant-based versions of iconic dishes played a key role in its selection.
