CHICAGO — As the city heads into another summer weekend, forecasters are warning of intensifying heat across the Chicago area — with temperatures expected to climb into the upper 80s and 90s by Saturday afternoon. And while skies will remain mostly clear through most of the weekend, storm chances are rising for late Sunday, according to the First Alert Weather team.
Chief Meteorologist Albert Ramon delivered the updated forecast Friday, cautioning residents to take heat precautions as the region experiences another spike in humidity and temperature.
Hot and Humid Days Ahead
Chicagoans should prepare for highs in the 90s starting Saturday and continuing through Sunday afternoon. The heat index — which measures how hot it actually feels with humidity — could push conditions closer to 100°F in some areas, especially in urban heat pockets and less shaded neighborhoods.
“The sun will be out in full force, and we’re advising everyone to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets,” Ramon said during the First Alert forecast.
Storm Risk Late Sunday Evening
By late Sunday, conditions may shift as unstable air masses move into the region, increasing the likelihood of thunderstorms or scattered showers after sunset. Ramon emphasized that while the risk of severe weather remains low, lightning and brief downpours are possible.
“While most of the weekend will be dry, we’re watching a weak front that may trigger isolated storms in the late evening hours on Sunday,” Ramon added.
