CHICAGO — A string of early morning burglaries has local businesses in Beverly and Avalon Park on edge as Chicago Police investigate a series of break-ins that occurred between 3 and 5 a.m. on June 27.
According to a police business alert, between one and four suspects used a crowbar to break into local restaurants, smashing glass doors to gain quick access. Once inside, the offenders targeted cash machines and merchandise, fleeing before police could respond.
Multiple Incidents in the Predawn Hours
Police documented three separate burglaries on June 27, including:
-
The 1400 block of East 87th Street
-
The 2400 block of West 111th Street
-
The 11500 block of South Western Avenue
All occurred in the early morning when most streets were empty and visibility was low — a pattern the suspects appear to be exploiting.
Suspects Used Dark Clothing, Masks
Witness accounts have provided limited detail, with suspects reportedly wearing:
-
Black hooded sweatshirts
-
Blue or black pants
-
Black face coverings
This attire has made identification difficult, and no arrests have been made so far.
CPD Urges Businesses to Enhance Security
The Chicago Police Department is urging business owners to stay vigilant, particularly during overnight and early morning hours. CPD advises:
-
Keeping exterior areas well-lit
-
Ensuring surveillance cameras are active and properly positioned
-
Maintaining strong locks and secure entry points
In the event of a break-in, police recommend not touching anything and immediately contacting authorities. Businesses should also preserve any available video footage and gather contact information from witnesses if possible.
Crime Prevention Tips from CPD
To reduce the risk of becoming a target, CPD also suggests:
-
Leaving empty cash drawers open and visible from the outside
-
Regularly inspecting locks, glass, and entry points
-
Reviewing camera angles and lighting placement
-
Training staff to recognize and report suspicious behavior
The officers from the 4th and 22nd Districts are continuing their investigation and hope community vigilance will deter further crimes in the area.
