CHICAGO — Chicago Fire FC has unveiled official renderings and fresh details for a $650 million soccer-specific stadium set to become a new landmark in the city’s South Loop. The project, announced Monday, will anchor the area known as The 78, a 62-acre riverfront site just south of Roosevelt Road.
The stadium is expected to open in 2028, with construction starting in 2026, and it will be entirely privately financed by Fire owner and chairman Joe Mansueto.
“I love this city and its architecture,” said Mansueto. “This stadium is adding to Chicago’s iconic skyline, so I want it to look timeless.”
Stadium Design and Seating Details
The new venue will seat 22,000 fans, designed to deliver an intimate but electric matchday environment. Architectural firm Gensler has envisioned the stadium in the “Chicago School” style, combining brick, glass, and steel to reflect the city’s historic industrial look.
Key stadium features include:
- 50 luxury suites
- 500 Loge seats
- 3,500 Club seats
- Dedicated supporters’ section for 2,000 fans
- Open-air design with natural grass
- Steel canopy for sound amplification and crowd energy
According to WGN, the project is not just an infrastructure upgrade — it’s aimed at building a “fortress” for fans and players alike.
Strategic Impact for Chicago and MLS
Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber praised the project as “one of the most ambitious stadium builds in league history.”
“This will be a transformative moment for the club and a landmark for Chicago sports,” Garber said.
The stadium will replace the team’s current home at Soldier Field and is expected to boost year-round economic activity in the rapidly developing South Loop.
Community and Club Vision
President of Business Operations Dave Baldwin emphasized the project’s focus on fans:
“We’re creating a home for our supporters—an edge for our players—and a venue Chicago can be proud of.”
The club is also planning additional fan amenities and entertainment options at the stadium site to create a multi-use destination beyond game days.
