Chicago Firefighter Paralyzed After Triathlon Injury in San Francisco Bay

CHICAGO — A longtime Chicago firefighter has been left paralyzed after a devastating accident during a San Francisco triathlon earlier this month, according to a report by NBC Chicago.

Jose Perez, a 10-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department, was participating in the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon when another swimmer landed directly on his head as he dove into the San Francisco Bay, causing a severe spinal injury.

“I Couldn’t Move” — Perez Recounts Traumatic Moment

From his hospital bed in California, Perez described the moment his life changed.

“I could feel my head about to hit the surface, and then — boom — it felt like a big weight hit the back of my head,” he said.

Despite telling himself to swim, he couldn’t move or float — and found himself face down in the water, helpless until help arrived.

Veteran Triathlete Now Facing Long Recovery

Perez has competed in triathlons for years and had looked forward to the event. Now, he’s focused on healing and holding onto hope.

“I’d like to go back home to my son. I’d like to teach him how to drive — that was supposed to happen next year,” he said.

Doctors are cautiously optimistic that he may regain most physical functions within a year, though he won’t be cleared to travel for at least six months. He’s still deciding whether to continue treatment in California or return home to Chicago when possible.

Family Launches Fundraiser To Support Recovery

Perez says he’s leaning on his faith and family, who have stood by him every step of the way. In response, loved ones have created a donation page to help cover medical expenses during his extended recovery. The official fundraiser was referenced in NBC 5’s full coverage.
