Chicago — A South Side neighborhood is grieving the death of 17-year-old D’Angelo Miles, a recent graduate of Hansberry College Prep and captain of its football team, who was found fatally shot in an alley early Sunday morning.
According to the Chicago Police Department, Miles was with another person in an alley in the 11900 block of South Wallace when gunshots rang out. Responding officers found him lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred just days after Miles had graduated from Hansberry College Prep, located in the city’s Auburn Gresham neighborhood. He had also recently enlisted in the Navy and was set to begin training next month, according to school staff.
“He would’ve started training next month,” said head coach Derrick Moore, who described D’Angelo as a disciplined and committed student-athlete.
Remembered as a Leader and Friend
In a post shared Sunday on Facebook, Hansberry College Prep honored Miles with a tribute, calling his death a “tragic loss.” The post included a photo of Miles in his graduation gown.
Principal Kashawndra Wilson also expressed shock at the loss, emphasizing that D’Angelo was more than just an athlete.
“He was also the manager of the school’s baseball and basketball teams,” Wilson said. “He was known and loved by every grade level. This would be the last call you would expect to get for him.”
Ongoing Investigation
As of now, no arrests have been made, and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances around the fatal shooting.
Police have not yet determined a motive, and there were no updates on the second person who was with Miles at the time of the shooting.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Chicago Police Department Area Two detectives.
Community Impact
The tragedy has reignited concerns about youth safety in South Side neighborhoods. Community members and school officials are calling for increased patrols and support services for students navigating post-graduation life in high-risk areas.
