Chicago Marathon Breaks Economic Records With $683 Million Impact In 2024

CHICAGO — A Record Year for One of the City’s Biggest Events

The 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon delivered an economic windfall for the Chicago region, generating $683 million in economic impact, according to a new study. That figure marks a 22% increase over 2023, making it the most economically impactful marathon in the city’s history.

Officials say the marathon not only draws global runners but also boosts local tourism, jobs, and community participation in powerful ways.

Thousands of Runners, Millions in Donations

The 2024 event, held on October 13, welcomed nearly 53,000 runners to the streets of Chicago. Participation from out-of-state runners more than doubled compared to the previous year, indicating a sharp rise in national travel and tourism linked to the race.

A record-breaking $36 million was raised for charities worldwide, credited to the runners and their fundraising partners.

“The marathon brings together the Chicago community in a powerful and unique way,” said Kristen Reynolds, CEO of Choose Chicago. “It combines incredible economic impact with unmatched energy across neighborhoods.”

Boost to Local Employment

The marathon also had a notable effect on local employment:

  • 4,589 full-time jobs were supported by the event — a 24% increase over 2023

  • These jobs generated $229 million in wages and salaries

Rita Cook, President of Bank of America Chicago, praised the collective effort:
“On behalf of BofA, we’re amazed by the people who bring this event to life — from the runners to the volunteers and the spectators. Their impact on Chicago is immense.”

Community and Culture at the Core

Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski emphasized the marathon’s spirit of community:
“The essence of the marathon lies in the community it builds. We are grateful for the dedication of our team and look forward to seeing athletes push their limits again this year.”

Volunteers, city workers, local businesses, and residents played vital roles in making the race not only a logistical success but a cultural celebration.

What’s Next: 2025 Marathon Already in the Works

The 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, October 12, at Grant Park. Organizers expect it to live up to — and potentially surpass — the high standards set in 2024.

NBC Chicago and NBC 5 will broadcast the race live, with full streaming available online.

Why It Matters

The Chicago Marathon isn’t just a race. It’s an annual tradition that unites neighborhoods, boosts the economy, and spotlights Chicago on the global stage. With rising participation and increasing economic benefits, the city’s investment in the event continues to pay off.
