South Side, Chicago — A 36-year-old Chicago police officer was shot and killed Thursday night during a South Side foot chase, authorities confirmed Friday. Another officer sustained a wrist injury during the violent encounter.
The fallen officer was identified as Officer Krystal Rivera, a dedicated member of the 6th District Tactical Team, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Rivera was fatally shot around 9:50 p.m. in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue, police said.
Incident Began With Foot Chase Through Residential Area
According to Chicago Police Department (CPD) officials, officers attempted to stop a male suspect when he fled into a nearby building. Officers pursued the suspect inside, where they encountered an armed individual.
“Inside the residence, there was a confrontation, and at some point an officer discharged their weapon,” CPD officials said. The suspect fled the building but was apprehended shortly afterward.
Three Firearms Recovered, Suspect in Custody
Authorities confirmed that three firearms were recovered at the scene. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, and charges are pending as the investigation continues.
The CPD’s Investigative Response Team is leading the inquiry into the shooting. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) has also been notified and will be reviewing the incident.
Officer Rivera Remembered As Dedicated Public Servant
Superintendent Larry Snelling spoke publicly about Officer Rivera, who leaves behind a young daughter.
“She did great work and if you talk to anyone on her team they will tell you how great of a worker she was,” Snelling said. “This is the risk that our officers take every single day.”
Rivera’s death marks another somber reminder of the daily risks law enforcement officers face while protecting their communities.
Second Officer Injured But Expected to Recover
Another officer involved in the pursuit sustained a wrist injury and was transported to a hospital. CPD officials said the officer is currently in fair condition.
Investigation Continues As City Mourns
Officials have not yet disclosed the motive for the initial stop or whether the suspect had prior contact with law enforcement. As of Friday morning, no further details had been released about the suspect or forthcoming charges.
Mayor Brandon Johnson has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the shooting.
