Chicago Police Warn of Armed Crew Burglarizing Work Vans Across North Side

CHICAGO — Police are warning residents about a string of violent work van burglaries carried out by armed crews across multiple neighborhoods, including Irving Park, North Park, and Portage Park. The suspects, who are believed to be responsible for several incidents, have not hesitated to open fire when confronted — injuring at least three people in recent days.

Burglary Pattern Targets North and Northwest Side Work Vans

Chicago police say the burglars have been operating in the early morning hours, using saws to cut through locks and steal tools from parked work vans. Surveillance footage from a June 9 incident in Portage Park showed a crew of masked suspects rifling through a van before fleeing in a silver four-door sedan.

The most recent targeted locations include:

  • 5700 block of North Christiana Ave.

  • 5500 block of North Christiana Ave.

  • 4300 block of North Bernard Ave.

  • 3900 block of North Richmond Ave.

  • 3600 block of North Whipple Ave.

Witnesses described the suspects as three Black males wearing dark clothing and face coverings, with each reportedly carrying a handgun.

Victims Confronting Burglars Shot Across the City

Multiple shootings have been linked to individuals attempting to stop these crimes:

  • June 17, South Loop: A 27-year-old man was shot in the back after confronting burglars breaking into his car on South Wabash. At least 30 shots were fired during the incident.

  • June 14, Portage Park: A 57-year-old was shot in the leg when he tried to stop a burglar from stealing from his vehicle.

  • June 9, West Ridge: A contractor was shot at while trying to prevent theft from his work van in the 6800 block of North Seeley. He was not hit.

In all cases, the suspects managed to flee before police arrived.

Citywide Concerns Over Armed Auto Burglars

The recent incidents follow a troubling trend of car burglars engaging in shootouts across Chicago. Notably:

  • In March, a concealed carry holder shot a 21-year-old man attempting to break into his car on the Far South Side.

  • In April, a shootout in South Shore left a 38-year-old victim wounded, while three suspects escaped.

  • Days later, a 66-year-old concealed carry holder was shot during a gun battle in Pilsen.

  • On April 28, an off-duty Chicago police officer was injured during a shootout with burglars in West Lawn.

Despite law enforcement efforts, these criminals often evade capture, prompting increased concern among residents and workers who rely on vans for their trade.
