Chicago Protest Planned After ICE Detains Union Leader David Huerta

CHICAGO — Immigrant rights groups and labor activists are planning back-to-back protests in downtown Chicago this week, following the detention of SEIU-USWW President David Huerta during an ICE raid in Los Angeles. Flyers circulating online are calling the actions part of a “mass mobilization” from LA to Chicago under the banner ICE OUT!

The first rally is scheduled for Monday, June 9 at 9:00 a.m., and a larger follow-up protest is planned for Tuesday, June 10 at 5:30 p.m., both at Federal Plaza (Adams & Dearborn Streets).

According to organizers, Huerta was assaulted, injured, and taken into custody by ICE agents while demonstrating in support of migrant workers during a federal enforcement action in Los Angeles on Friday.

“This is a clear attack on our communities, workers, and our First Amendment rights,” reads a statement posted by organizers and attributed to SEIU.

While Huerta has since been released from the hospital, he reportedly remains in federal custody, fueling outrage among union leaders and immigration advocates.

From LA to Chicago: National Call to Action

Protest graphics widely shared across social media — including one that reads “FROM LA TO CHICAGO: ICE OUT!” — signal that Chicago is the next major target in what is being described as a coordinated, national response.

“The chaos makers are mobilizing,” one viral post read. “Don’t be fooled by the optics — this isn’t just grassroots.”

Organizers allege the Trump administration is using military-clad ICE agents and National Guard forces in urban raids aimed at immigrant communities. The language in the flyers warns of an authoritarian crackdown and urges supporters to “take to the streets in protest.”

What Protesters Are Demanding

At the heart of the movement are three core demands:

  • Immediate release of David Huerta

  • An end to ICE raids targeting immigrant communities

  • Protection of workers’ rights to organize and protest without fear of detention

The flyers also link the ICE raids to broader concerns about free speech, labor rights, and sanctuary city policies.

“We cannot let this repression go unanswered,” wrote protest organizer Andy1917 in a post accompanying the event.

Do you support the protests calling for ICE accountability and Huerta’s release? Or do you think federal enforcement is justified?
