CHICAGO — After two days of much-needed rain amid a lingering drought, Chicagoans woke up Thursday to a foggy, hazy start — and conditions are likely to linger through the day.
Patchy fog developed across the region following recent rainfall, with the heaviest precipitation totals recorded east of I-57, particularly across parts of Northwest Indiana, according to FOX 32 Meteorologist Mike Caplan.
Dense Fog And Smoke Prompt Advisories
A Dense Fog Advisory was issued for parts of the southwestern Chicago metro area Thursday morning. In addition to natural moisture-driven fog, hazy skies are being fueled by Canadian wildfire smoke drifting southward, which led officials to issue an Air Quality Alert for sensitive populations.
“People with respiratory difficulties are wise to limit exertion outside,” Caplan noted.
Residents are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak haze hours and monitor air quality updates throughout the day.
Today’s Forecast: Mild With Sun Breaks
The Thursday forecast calls for partly sunny skies, with temperatures expected to top out in the low 70s. Overnight, conditions will turn partly to mostly cloudy, with lows dipping into the 50s.
Looking Ahead: Warmer, But Rain Lurks
Friday will bring a modest warm-up. Temperatures are forecast to be a couple of degrees higher than Thursday — especially away from the lakefront, where cool breezes could moderate the heat. Partly sunny skies are expected, with a small chance of a shower south of I-80 during the afternoon.
The weekend forecast remains favorable for outdoor plans:
-
Saturday will start off bright and dry, with highs in the low 70s under plenty of sunshine.
-
Sunday turns a bit warmer but comes with a higher chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening hours.
Next Week: Seasonally Pleasant, Showers Possible
Early next week is shaping up to be seasonably pleasant. Highs will hover around normal levels for early June. However, Monday may bring renewed chances of showers, so residents planning outings are advised to stay updated with the latest forecast.
