CHICAGO — A new sea otter has joined the ranks at Shedd Aquarium, and she’s already stealing hearts. Meet Jade, the latest rescue to dive into life at the Abbott Oceanarium, where she joins other rescued otters like Luna and Watson.
The fluffy newcomer, formerly known as Otter 937, was officially named through a public onsite vote hosted by the aquarium. Guests were given a list of potential names — including Esa, Marina, and Rey — but Jade quickly emerged as the crowd favorite.
Name Inspired by California Coast
Jade’s new name isn’t just cute — it’s meaningful. It pays tribute to Jade Cove, a scenic spot south of Monterey, California, known for its lush coastal views and underwater diving. The connection reflects both her roots and her aquatic future.
“She’s making quite the splash,” Shedd Aquarium noted in a public statement.
Settling in at the Abbott Oceanarium
Since arriving in Chicago, Jade has been adjusting well to her environment. According to CBS News Chicago, she’s already showing key behaviors such as diving, grooming, and socializing with the otter community — critical skills if she’s to eventually take on a role as a surrogate mother to other rescued pups.
Andrea Oake, manager of sea otters and sea lions at Shedd Aquarium, shared that Jade is fitting in wonderfully.
“Our animal care team is happy with how well she’s acclimated, and we’re having a lot of fun getting to know her. She is very inquisitive but also calm and confident,” said Oake in an interview with FOX32 Chicago.
Those traits make Jade a promising addition not just for public enjoyment, but also for the aquarium’s long-term conservation goals.
Now Open to the Public
Visitors can now stop by and meet Jade at the Shedd Aquarium. She’s visible to the public and has already become a favorite among frequent guests. Whether she’s floating playfully or mimicking her tankmates, Jade is quickly becoming a beloved part of Chicago’s vibrant wildlife scene.
