Combative Shoplifter Taken Down by Joliet Police After Chaotic Walmart Incident

ILLINOIS — A chaotic shoplifting incident at a local Walmart led to the arrest of a combative Joliet man last week after he assaulted multiple officers and resisted arrest, police said.

35-year-old Armondo Arredondo was detained by the Joliet Police Department on June 18 at the Walmart located in the 2400 block of West Jefferson Street. He now faces multiple charges, including:

  • Aggravated battery to a police officer (2 counts)

  • Resisting and obstructing a police officer

  • Obstructing justice and identification

  • Retail theft

Incident Escalated During Arrest

According to police spokesperson Tizoc Landeros, the situation escalated shortly after officers responded to a call from Walmart’s loss prevention team around 10 a.m. The team had witnessed Arredondo concealing merchandise in his pockets.

When confronted near the store’s exit, Arredondo tried to push past the staff, prompting officers to assist in detaining him. While being escorted to the store’s loss prevention office, he allegedly provided a false name and date of birth.

Violent Behavior at Police Booking Area

The arrest took a disturbing turn once Arredondo was brought to the Joliet Police Booking area.

“[Arredondo] became combative, pushed toward the exit, and had to be taken to the ground,” said Landeros.

He reportedly spat on two officers, threw a sandal, and removed his clothing during processing. Despite partially dressing again, he continued to refuse cooperation, leading to his transfer to Will County Jail.

The incident was first covered by Joliet Patch, which outlined the full list of charges and booking details.

Repeat Offender History

Police records show this was Arredondo’s third time in the Will County Jail since 2024, with another detention on record from 2014. He is a resident of the 500 block of Hillside Road in Joliet.

Jail documents indicate he was released by Will County judges on Friday, though details on his next court appearance are pending.
