CHICAGO — A violent robbery attempt in the West Loop took an unexpected turn Tuesday morning when a licensed concealed carry holder opened fire on two armed suspects who had just assaulted and robbed a woman, according to Chicago police.
Robbery Turns Confrontational on Hubbard Street
The incident unfolded around 8:50 a.m. in the 1100 block of West Hubbard Street, where a 38-year-old woman was standing outside when two men approached her with handguns. Police say the suspects demanded her belongings, pistol-whipped her, and fled with her possessions.
Moments later, a 41-year-old man who holds a concealed carry license witnessed the crime and decided to intervene. When the suspects turned their guns on him, the witness drew his own firearm and fired shots in their direction.
Suspects Escape, No Injuries Reported
Despite the shots fired, no one was hit, and the suspects fled the scene in a black Lexus sedan with stolen New Jersey license plates, heading northbound.
The female victim declined medical treatment, and no other injuries were reported at the scene.
Police have not released any description of the suspects, and the case remains under investigation.
CCL Self-Defense Cases Under Scrutiny
This latest West Loop incident adds to the growing number of self-defense cases involving concealed carry license (CCL) holders in Chicago. As violent crimes persist across neighborhoods, more residents are using their legal right to intervene — a trend sparking both praise and debate within the city.
