Cooking Fire Causes $100K in Damage at Naperville Apartment Complex

ILLINOIS — A cooking-related fire inside a Naperville apartment building caused $100,000 in damage Monday morning and left multiple families temporarily displaced, according to fire officials.

The incident happened around 9:56 a.m. on June 30, when Naperville’s Emergency Communications Center received a report of a stove fire inside an apartment unit on the 1600 block of Country Lakes Drive.

Heavy Smoke and Rapid Evacuation

Naperville police were first on the scene by 10 a.m., where they found heavy smoke pouring out of a second-floor unit. Officers immediately began evacuating residents from the building and attempted to fight the flames with fire extinguishers. However, they were forced to retreat due to the intensity of the smoke.

Two officers were evaluated for smoke inhalation on scene, but fortunately did not require hospitalization, the Naperville Fire Department confirmed.

Firefighters Contain Blaze Within 15 Minutes

Fire crews arrived shortly after police and conducted a rapid assessment. The source of the blaze was located in a second-floor kitchen, and firefighters quickly deployed a hose line to knock down the flames.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes of the department’s arrival. Crews remained on site for over 90 minutes to assist with overhaul operations and support building maintenance teams.

Four Units Deemed Uninhabitable

Officials confirmed that the fire was accidental and started during cooking. While no civilians or firefighters were injured, four apartment units — including the origin unit — were rendered uninhabitable due to fire and smoke damage.

The estimated loss is $100,000, and displaced residents are expected to receive support through property management or local services.

The response was a joint effort involving Naperville Fire, Naperville Police, and the city’s Transportation and Engineering Department.
