CHICAGO — A late-night walk turned dangerous for a young couple in Lakeview after they were robbed and carjacked at gunpoint by a group of men early Sunday morning, according to Chicago police.

Targeted While Walking on West Barry

The incident occurred around 3:25 a.m. on the 700 block of West Barry Avenue, near Boystown. A 23-year-old woman and 25-year-old man were approached by four men, one of whom pulled out a firearm and demanded their belongings and vehicle, police said.

The victims handed over their personal items and the keys to their black Mercedes-Benz sedan. The robbers then fled the scene with the car, according to a CPD spokesperson.

Vehicle Recovered, But Suspects Still at Large

About an hour later, officers located the stolen Mercedes in an alley behind the 4300 block of West Jackson Boulevard, roughly 7 miles away from where the robbery occurred. The vehicle had been abandoned.

No one was injured during the robbery, and no arrests have been made as of Monday morning. Police did not release descriptions of the suspects involved.

Rising Concern in Affluent Neighborhoods

Lakeview, one of Chicago’s more well-trafficked and affluent neighborhoods, has seen a number of armed robberies and carjackings in recent months. While no injuries were reported in this particular case, the boldness and coordination of the four-man crew alarmed residents and reignited concerns over public safety in pedestrian-heavy areas.

The incident comes amid citywide discussions about rising crime during overnight hours and efforts to increase patrols near CTA stops and popular late-night corridors.
