CHICAGO — Chicago police are asking for the public’s help identifying a man who allegedly shot and killed a 58-year-old South Shore resident, Alonzo “Zo” Smith, earlier this month. The killing occurred just after 1 a.m. on June 3 on the 7800 block of South Merrill Avenue.
Witnesses said the fatal incident followed a verbal dispute between two men. Moments after hearing the argument, gunshots rang out. One nearby resident reported hearing a chilling final exchange:
“Why you gotta shoot?” the victim was heard saying before collapsing.
Smith, who lived just a block away, was found with a single gunshot wound to the head, lying in the front yard of a home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Victim Remembered as Respected Neighbor
Smith was well known in the community and remembered fondly by neighbors.
“Killed a good man, I’m sure for nothing,” said one woman. “He watched me grow up. We loved him. He will be missed.”
No motive has been released, and police have not confirmed whether Smith knew his killer.
