CHICAGO — As school lets out and summer begins, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is stepping in to support families across the city with the return of its annual free summer meal program, launching Monday, June 30.
The program, which operates at outdoor “grab-and-go” sites, ensures that any child between the ages of 1 and 18 can receive free breakfast and lunch regardless of enrollment status in CPS or any summer programming.
No ID, No Enrollment Needed
Participation is simple — no ID or registration is required, but children must be present and meals must be consumed on site.
The program is designed to fill the nutrition gap during the summer months for families who rely on school-based meals during the academic year.
“These meals are more than food — they’re a sign of stability, care, and continued partnership with families who count on us,” said Jason Mojica, executive director of CPS Nutrition Support Services.

Building Trust Through Summer Support
Mojica emphasized that schools remain critical anchors in the community, even after classrooms close for summer. The food program offers more than just nutritional value — it supports family well-being, neighborhood stability, and trust in public systems.
This initiative is part of a broader CPS effort to reduce food insecurity during the summer, especially in neighborhoods with limited access to grocery stores or youth services.
